Dear Students and cherished Parents and Friends,

Warm greetings and welcome to the Department of Renewable Energy Engineering in the School of Energy at the University of Energy and Natural Resources, Sunyani, Ghana. The Department recognizes and appreciates you as an equal partner in the teaching, learning, research, and community service processes. To our students, congratulations on being part of our department where you can achieve your highest potential. As a member of the Department of Renewable Energy Engineering, you are now part of a community of scholars that is engaging, dynamic, innovative, and supportive, and I encourage you to become an active participant in this amazing group of students, through your involvement in activities, both in and out of the classroom.

 

Due to the limited supply of hydrocarbon fuel and the global warming challenges, there is currently an increasing demand for renewable energy. The object of the Renewable Energy Engineering Department is to graduate qualified Engineers in renewable energies such as solar energy, wind energy, bioenergy, geothermal, and small hydropower, as well as energy efficiency and sustainable development that will satisfy the needs of the local and regional market in the field of renewable energy. Students in the renewable energy department will study courses in electrical engineering, energy conversion, mechanical engineering, and renewable energy resources and essentials.

Our vision is to become a world-class department of excellence that harnesses its staff and students’ energies, skills, and competencies to deliver quality teaching/learning and research to impact society. We create a conducive environment that promotes the development of human resources and skills required to solve renewable energy challenges in society. Our main goal and core value is to transform the renewable energy engineering profession through excellent education, training, and innovative programmes that not only address both the needs and demands of the job markets but also embrace the emerging global trends and issues including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

 

The demand to innovate has become a rallying cry for institutions to forge ahead in new directions, and as such, innovation is now a currency of its own. This implies the urgent need to embrace emerging trends in the education and training of our students which we do by employing student-centered learning approaches including problem-based learning, competency-based training, and, project-based learning. Our students thus, acquire generic competencies of innovation, creativity, entrepreneurship, leadership, system-thinking, sustainable thinking, and lifelong learning. Indeed, there is nothing more thrilling or inspiring than being involved in innovative ideas and enterprise.

Our interdisciplinary approach to energy engineering education and research uniquely positions the department to educate the energy engineers of the future and to prepare them to work in a variety of fields and disciplines in various sectors of the economy including energy industries, education, universities, government organizations, public and private organizations, and international organizations.

 

Our research programs are exciting and versatile, and include Sustainable low-cost technologies, Waste-to-Energy, Energy Demand-side Management, Energy Efficiency, Smart Energy Technologies, Smart Cities Energy Storage Materials, Energy Storage Systems, E-mobility, Circular Economy, Energy Use Behaviour, Energy Communities, Energy Economics, Policy and Finance, Climate change, Energy-Water-Food Nexus, Hydrogen & Fuel Cells.

 

The Department proactively engages the students in all issues related to academic matters including awareness of HIV/AIDS, Conservation and Protection of the Environment, Plagiarism and Integrity, and Academic Excellence. As a matter of concern and priority, students are encouraged to associate and register in various relevant associations within and outside the university. Students are also encouraged to participate in various university-based programmes. The students are also motivated to participate in paper presentations, workshops and seminars that are essential to maintaining proficiency.

We will do our best in the department to make studying here a transformative learning experience and a springboard to a brighter and more fulfilling future for our graduating students. We also welcome our alumni and friends of the department to visit us, to provide their views and feedback, and to lend us their support.
