History of the
School

The School of Energy was carved out of the School of Engineering in the 2021/2022 academic year hosting 2 departments; the Department of Renewable Energy Engineering and the Department of Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering. The overall objectives of the School are to provide students with competitive skills and competencies within the Energy sector and also equip students with the necessary expertise to emerge as leaders in energy with a responsibility to promote inclusion, sustainability, equal opportunity, and development in all communities in Ghana and beyond.

One of the core mandates of the University of Energy and Natural Resources is to provide leadership in the energy sector in terms of research and innovation. To accomplish this mandate, the School of Energy as it is known now started as a department in the first year of the university in 2012/13 as the Department of Energy with a BSc Renewable Energy Engineering programme. The department, under the School of Engineering, was later renamed Energy and Environmental Engineering to accommodate allied programmes.

As the number of academic programmes increased, i.e., Renewable Energy Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, and Environmental Engineering, the Department split in the 2018/19 academic year, creating the path for its undergraduate programmes to form the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering; made up of Civil Engineering and Environmental Engineering, and the Department of Energy and Petroleum Engineering; made up of Renewable Energy Engineering and Petroleum Engineering.

In February 2022, the University created the School of Energy from the two existing programmes in the Department of Energy and Petroleum Engineering. Thus, the Departments of Renewable Energy Engineering and Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering were formed, being the two foundation Departments of the new school.

Currently, the School consists of two Departments: The Department of Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering and The Department of Renewable Energy Engineering. The Department of Renewable Energy Engineering offers programmes leading to the award of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, whilst the Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering Department currently offers an undergraduate programme in Petroleum Engineering.
